Putting the SaaS in oil & gas

Software as a Service (SaaS) has long since won the battle over perpetually licensed software for use in enterprise. But no industry lags further behind than oil and gas in adopting such technology. A naturally conservative mindset means that companies prefer to buy or develop their own software which quickly degrades and becomes outdated, rather than trusting to a SaaS model that offers lower costs, better support, and greater usability.

Without banging the DeepStream drum too much I want to use this post to look at what we think make the ingredients for a great **SaaS** company.

Innovation

Having the confidence to find new solutions to real needs, and not being afraid to use new methods to do it. And that’s done, to trust that when the people you made it for start using it, they’re going to love it.

Great technical abilities

Because lying behind every great piece of software is a team of coders with steamed-up glasses, tapping away at their terminals. With superhuman efforts they bring forth software into existence.

Knowing your market

Even with a great idea, there’s no substitute for knowing who your product serves and for reminding yourself every day. It’s even better when you know you are the people that can best serve their needs. We understand the varied terrain of our industry, and we’re here to provide the platform that offers the perfect fit for it.

The ability to react fast

As the designer John Maeda says, “By the time you've arrived at the perfect solution, the problem will have already changed”. We strive to be constantly adapting and growing. And whilst we know that oil and gas projects can have timelines that are decades long, we also know that they need to meet changing challenges as soon as they arise.

The desire to constantly improve, update, & maintain

Unlike traditional software where the burden of making sure it works on a day-to-day basis is based to the customer or their consultants, SaaS providers take responsibility for everything working all the time. We enjoy that responsibility.

Prioritising user experience

Good *SaaS* needs to be readily understood. More traditional software providers get away with murder by providing systems that are so clunky that their clients are forced to spend tens of hours learning how they work. Our platform is simple but sophisticated because we know that it’s not just important that something works, it’s important how it works. We test our software thoroughly to make sure we’ve got it right.

Great company culture

Research shows that there is a strong correlation between growth at SaaS companies and the likelihood of employees recommending working there, but this doesn’t hold true for more traditional software providers. Recognising the value of great company culture helps build a better product.
